There’s a lot of talk about distracted driving, but is it really so bad? It might be even worse, honestly. Driving while distracted is incredibly dangerous, and it can lead to big problems for you and everyone else on the road with you. Here’s what The Auto Shop of Chapin wants you to know.
Distracted Driving Leads to Accidents
Distracted driving covers a lot of ground. Sometimes people are distracted by conversations in their car, using their phone, or adjusting mirrors. But other times the distraction is as simple as being zoned out or even being too tired to drive. The biggest problem with being distracted behind the wheel is that it can very easily lead to accidents.
You Might Not Notice Mechanical Issues as Quickly
When you’re distracted, there’s not much you’re noticing, honestly. So it’s all that much easier to overlook a possible mechanical issue, especially if it’s a small one. But the problem with that is that mechanical issues can also lead to accidents, and that’s something you want to avoid if at all possible.
Handle Anything That Could Be Distracting Before You Start Driving
Whether you share a car with someone else or you find that your mirrors and seat just need adjusting regularly, do that before you even start the car. Make it a habit so you’re not trying to handle those things while you’re actively driving. If you want to listen to exactly the right music, tune the radio before you get moving, too. Don’t do those things while you’re trying to drive, because those are big distractions.
Use Defensive Driving Strategies
Do you remember much about defensive driving from when you were first learning to drive? There’s a lot there that’s useful for avoiding distractions and for driving safely. Make sure that you’re giving other cars plenty of space and that you’re paying attention both in front of you and slightly in front of the car in front of you, too. That’s going to help you to avoid potential issues. Drive the speed limit and do everything you can to avoid being in a rush.
