No, there is not a specific time to replace an engine. Some engines get well over 300,000 miles before they need to be replaced, whereas others only last between 100,000 miles and 200,000 miles. We are going to list some problems below that suggest you might need a new engine. At a minimum, you may need a partial engine rebuild to resolve the problem and get you back out on the road.
Constant Overheating
A partial engine rebuild may be in order if your automobile overheats constantly. This could be a sign that you’ve blown the head gasket. It can also be a sign that the exhaust manifold needs to be replaced because it is leaking. If the engine block is cracked, you may need a new engine to solve the problem. The engine may also overheat all the time if the cooling system is damaged and needs to be replaced.
Excessive Engine Exhaust
You may also be in line for an engine rebuild if you see excessive engine exhaust in your rearview mirror. Excessive exhaust is caused by burning automotive fluids, i.e., your engine is leaking coolant, fuel, or oil, respectively. The color of the exhaust will determine the leaking fluid. Again, respectively, the exhaust will be white, black, or blue. We may need to rebuild the engine depending on the size of the leak.
Knocking All the Time
Another cause for a partial engine rebuild is worn rod bearings. The bearings move the rods up and down inside the cylinders. The pistons are attached to the rods. If the bearings are worn out, the rods will move up and down unevenly and cause the pistons to collide with the cylinder walls. Naturally, this can damage the cylinders. We will need to rebuild the cylinder block to replace the rod bearings.
Metal in the Motor Oil
There is no way around a new engine if you see metal in your motor oil. Unfortunately, the metal is coming from your engine parts; they are dissolving into the oil. We cannot fix this problem, and a partial engine rebuild won’t do the trick because, most likely, all of the parts are dissolving. As such, we will need to remove the disintegrating engine and replace it with a new one that has new parts.
Finally, your engine will need to be replaced if it cannot produce power. This is a sign that the engine is done for good. Call us today if you have any of the problems discussed above.
