Four Ways to Be More of a Defensive Driver

Defensive driving is an excellent way for you to be as safe as possible on the road. If every driver practiced some of these defensive driving tips, there would be way fewer accidents on the road. Here’s what The Auto Shop of Chapin wants you to know about being as safe as you can while driving.

Avoid Rushing

You probably already know this in other areas of your life, but the more you rush and the more you hurry, the slower you ultimately go. That’s because you’re more likely to make mistakes and you’re more likely to be frustrated and upset. That’s not the mindset that you need to have behind the wheel. Do everything you can to avoid rushing as often as you can. You’ll be a safer and more defensive driver.

Leave Plenty of Room

When you’re not rushing, it’s also easier to leave yourself plenty of room between your own car and other obstacles, especially other drivers. Admittedly, this can be tough when some of the folks sharing the road with you close up that space or take it over themselves, but it’s important to keep trying. The more space you leave between yourself and other vehicles, the easier it will be to avoid problems when they arise in front of you.

Don’t Blindly Believe Other Drivers

You want to believe that other drivers are out there making the best possible decisions, right? But sometimes they don’t use turn signals and turn anyway, or vice versa. The idea here is that you need to be aware of what other drivers indicate they’re going to do, but don’t blindly believe that’s what they’ll do. People have been known to try changing their mind, and the course of their vehicle, with very little notice. So it helps to be prepared for that possibility.

Reduce Distractions as Much as Possible

The fewer distractions you allow yourself as you’re driving, the better. That’s because driving is plenty distracting on its own. You certainly don’t need anything else making this more complicated. Anything that takes your attention, your eyes, or your hands away from driving is something that can wait until you’re at your destination.

It’s also important to keep your car in good working order if you’re planning to be the best you can as a defensive driver. The Auto Shop of Chapin in Chapin, SC can help. Give us a call today to make an appointment for any services or repairs your car may need.
